1839. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 42". Standard configuration. Nearly all flintlock muskets of this period were converted to percussion before issue. This example has 42" bbl. Retained by 3 spring retained bands. Springs are in front of mid & rear bands. Breech end of bbl. is stamped w/ “P”, eagle head & “V” proofs. Tang is stamped “1839”. Bbl. is converted to percussion w/ nipple on top right of bbl. Lock marked “SPRINGFIELD 1839” on tail has “US” & eagle in front of what is believed to be an original hammer. Remnants of pan have been filled & filed flat. Walnut stock has low, unfluted comb. Triggerguard has rounded ends & is stamped “EH”. Buttplate is stamped “US” on tang. Inspectors initials “JBS” & “AJB” are behind triggerguard tang & “EG” & “LW” are behind sideplate. Sling loops are fitted to rounded boss on triggerguard bow & central band. A trumpet head ramrod is present. CONDITION: very good to fine. Metal parts cleaned to silver gray leaving pinprick pitting overall. Stock retains nearly all of its original finish w/ numerous scratches & bumps. Inspectors marks are crisp. There are no major wood losses, only a few minor chips along bbl. channel. Good bore.
