CARBINE WITH WATERVLIET ARMORY CONVERSION USED BY VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA CAVALRY UNITS. Cal. 52 smoothbore. NSN. Bbl. 21", shortened from original length, bayonet removed & sling bar added circa 1847. Usual boxlock percussion loading block marked "US NORTH XXX CONN XX36". Steel trigger guard w/ 2 finger grooves extends to buttplate & has recess under cover. Right side of butt is carved "J. W. HORT" & "C.S" is punch dot stamped on left side of forend. Inspectors mark "NWP P" is on left side of receiver ring. CONDITION: fair to good. Iron parts dark brown patina w/ silver highlights over considerable pitting on action. Stock w/ old refinish has a number of cracks in action area. Rusted bore. Lock operable. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20467/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
