MODEL 1855  BRAZILIAN  ENFIELD NAVY RIFLE.

Cal. 577 w/ 3 groove rifling. NSN. Bbl. 32" w/ long range rear sight, iron bead front & lg. bayonet lug on right side at muzzle has Belgian proof at left rear. 3601 Is stamped on bayonet lug to match w/ non-accompanying bayonet. Front percussion lock is stamped "D", anchor, "C" at center. This mark is also on face of rnd. bodied hammer. Lock plate & hammer are line border engraved. Walnut stock is held by 2 spring retained iron bands & is otherwise brass mounted. Simple trigger guard w/ nipple protector attached has "D", anchor, "C" mark on tang. Buttplate is unmarked. An interesting brass shield depicting a heraldic American eagle cast in relief is screwed to top of grip. Remnants of some inspector's markings including the "D", anchor, "C" mark are on right side of butt which also has incised initials "DH". These initials are also on left side of butt. Left side of stock between lock screws is lightly marked "J H COX". CONDITION: good. Metal parts cleaned to silvery gray w/ considerable overall pitting . Brass nicely toned. Stock w/ old oil refinish has many marks & dings. Bore is good. Lock is good. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20479/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,500.
