MODEL 1861 NEEDHAM CONVERSION BREECHLOADING
MUSKET WITH BAYONET. Cal. 58 CF. NSN. Bbl. 36 3/4". Originally mfg. as a Model 1861 musket in 1863 by Bridesburg, this example was subsequently modified after the Civil War via a Needham breechloading conversion by Jenks & Sons of Philadelphia, PA. Lockplate is marked (nearly illegibly) "BRIDESBURG" at the center, with "1863" stamped at the tail. Buttplate tang is marked "US". Standard plain wood buttstock with iron buttplate, trigger guard, bbl. bands, and nose cap. Rear sight assembly is missing its additional leafs. Replacement ramrod. Socket bayonet is marked "US". CONDITION: lockplate, breech, breech door,buttplate, and bbl. bands exhibit extensive pitting, with most markings being nearly illegible, and with the balance exhibiting a dark brown patina. Bbl. exhibits matching pitting, with areas of heavy cleaning overall. Dark pitted bore. Action does not function. Wood stock exhibits scattered marks and impressions, with some chipping present around the breech tang, and a split present on the right side of the forend that stems from the nosecap. Bayonet exhibits a gray patina, with some scattered spots of mild pitting, as well as some areas of darker discoloration. (01-24526/MLW). ANTIQUE. $400-800.
