'Eastern Carbine' manufactured circa 1898. Features 22" round barrel, full length magazine tube, blade front sight, flip-up ladder type rear sight, straight grip, curved steel carbine buttplate, sling swivels. Bore is good condition, lightly frosted, with strong rifling. Metal surfaces display a grayish or brownish color, with dents & scratches, bare metal on sharp edges, small patches of patina in many places. Buttplate is bare metal with light coverage of patina giving a light brown color. Screw heads show lightly marred slots. Wood is good condition, varnished, overall good fit to metal, small wood loss at toe, scratches & shallow dents, some oil staining where wood touches metal. Large discolored scratches on left side of butt appear as possible letters or numbers, possibly just scratches. Action operates smoothly. Markings are sharp & readable, partially obscured by patina in several places. Includes letter from Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center describing features for this rifle contained in the original Marlin factory records.
