Vintage American made pump-action shotgun chambered for 2-3/4" 12 Gauge shells, and manufactured in New Haven, CT. The Model 1898 was in production from 1898 until 1905. Shotgun features a blued finish, an approximately 32" round barrel, steel bead front sight, fixed choke measures as "Improved Modified" with a drop-in gauge, smooth curved trigger, half-length magazine tube, external hammer with a checkered spur, rear receiver mounted bolt release (does not function), single action bar, and a smooth take-down button in front of the receiver. The walnut furniture consists of a smooth semi-pistol gripped shoulder stock, corn cob style slide handle, 13-3/4" length-of-pull, and a black serrated Martin polymer butt plate. The original blued finish retained is approximately 55% with general thinning, edge wear, and handling blemishes. The finish has faded in the thin areas to a dark mottled gray and brown patina with some traces of bright blue on the receiver. Metal displays no deformation, but there was a small amount of observed pin-prick pitting on the barrel. Wood is overall good condition with normal handling marks, light edge wear, and thinning finish. The action seems stiff, but functions. The checkered bolt release button does not seem to work, but pushing the firing pin 'in' on the rear of the receiver will release the bolt. The bore is bright and shiny, but a little dirty. In 1998 Marlin issued a service bulletin recommending several slide action models, including the 1898 hammer shotgun, should not be fired due to them being 70-100 years old.
Condition is NRA Fair to Good.
