late 19th/early 20th century, a Knights Templar sword made by Ames. Freemasonry bronze and silvered-metal sword, with black leather 3 ring sheath with silvered-metal fittings inscribed 'In hoc Signo' with image of snake wrapped around a cross on the throat, the sword blade etched " Newburyport Commandery', (Newburyport Commandery No. 3 is one of the oldest Masonic Knights Templar organizations in the U.S.. Originally organized in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1795 and formally chartered on May 19, 1808, it holds a deeply significant place in American Masonic history) on the other side the owner's name 'Royal H. Stevens',"In hoc signo vinces" (Latin for "In this sign, you will conquer") is the primary motto of the Knights Templar, an order of Freemasonry. Knight's head pommel, rooster on crossguard (deeply symbolic bird representing vigilance, preparedness, and the dawning of a new day), chain hand guard. No cross on the grips. overall very good condition. Antique or vintage Newburyport Commandery Masonic swords, particularly those manufactured by the historical Ames Sword Co. (Chicopee, Massachusetts), are very rare, highly sought-after swords. We could not find one for sale.
