SN: 9825 Civil War carbine used by US Cavalry, manufactured circa 1863 to 1865. Approx 20,000 of the "second model" were made. Features 20" barrel with octagonal breech section, no forend, blade front sight, folding leaf rear sight with 3 elevation settings, finger lever opening, external hammer, percussion ignition with cap nipple (no tape primer in the second model), wood butt with steel buttplate, saddle ring, bar is in place but ring is missing. Nipple is missing with damage to the metal around where it was set. Markings include Mass. Arms Co address on right frame, Edward Maynard with Patent dates on left frame, 'S' stamped on butt plate tang, & flat of breech & SN on lower tang, all clear & readable. Bore is good condition, bright with light pitting throughout, visible rifling. Metal surfaces are a light brownish gray color, fairly uniform with some variation in color and some darker areas, many areas of light pinprick pitting around breech. Screw heads are very good. Barrel is mostly a faded blue with scattered area of pin-prick pitting. Wood is very good with two clear inspectors cartouches 0n the left wrist, butt plate has rust/pitting . Condition is NRA Good.
