Massive Percussion Side-by-Side Hammer Shotgun, by J.H. Johnston of Pittsburgh, PA, probably used for market waterfowl hunting. A very thick 39'' set of barrels have a bore that measures 7 ga. and were proofed at the Birmingham proof house to 10 ga. Barrels are mounted to locks via hooked breech and appear to have large brass nipples. Both locks are marked ''Great Western Gun Works'', also located in Pittsburgh. The one-piece stock appears to be walnut, and the grip piece behind the triggerguard is made of horn. Flash shields are present to protect the shooter and are pitted from use. Mfg'd approx. 1870s. Condition is antique excellent, with functioning locks, very clean bores, and apparently original ramrod. Est.: $500-$700. (Antique)
