This is a very desirable pre-WWII deluxe Mauser called a "Type B Sporter." The Type B Sporter is a scarce factory built commercial rifle, not a conversion of a military rifle. This rifle is factory chambered for the 7x57mm Mauser cartridge. The roll mark 'Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf a/n' puts this rifle in pre 1922 production. Fewer than 127,000 commercial Mauser rifles and actions were produced between 1898 and 1946. Rifle features a blued refinish, stripper clip guides cut into the receiver, a 24" tapered barrel, folding express rear sight with one leaf standing (100, 200 meters), ramped front blade sight, double smooth curved set triggers, turned down bolt handle, left receiver rail mounted bolt release, three-position flag type manual safety on the bolt, barrel band mounted sling stud, hinged magazine floorplate with a swinging release lever, and a machined single-piece trigger guard and magazine box. The front and rear sight blades are replacements, and have not been finished. The refinished hardwood furniture consists of a factory checkered rounded "Prince of Wales" pistol grip shoulder stock, smooth forend, right-hand cheek piece, and a factory checkered horn butt plate. The barrel, bolt handle, receiver, bolt shroud, cocking piece, safety, extractor have matching serial numbers. The blued finish retained is approximately 97% with minor edge wear, light handling blemishes, finish losses on the sling stud and at the chambering mark. Metal displays no rust, but there is slight deformation in a couple of the screw slots. The bore is bright with strong rifling, and the action is smooth and crisp. The stock is in very good condition as refinished and repaired, with some handling marks, and the checkering at the wrist is still sharp. The buttplate shows chipping, and the bottom of the shoulder stock has been repaired.
Condition is NRA Very Good to Excellent.
