Mckeever M74 Black leather cartridge box. Embossed in circle with N.G.P. for National Guard Pennsylvania. Belt loops are intact, as well as the leather closure tab. the 20 web loops for the 45-70 cartridges are intact. Stitching is sound. Stamped on the closure tab, and printed inside is "McKeever's Patent Jan. 10 1873, J.H. Wilson, Phila. Stamped on the back is 13, A, 20. for Co. A of the 13th PA Volunteer Infantry. (20-Inventory/rack#) The 13th Infantry was formed from the PA National Guard, for the Spanish-American War. Co A being from Lackawanna (Scranton). They served from May 1898-March 1899. Assigned to Camp Alger, VA, 21 enlisted, and 1 officer died from disease. Alger was known as "fever camp" They were next sent to Camp McKenzie, GA, held in reserve for the occupation of Cuba. However the war ended quickly, and they were not needed. The 13th was issued Springfield trapdoors. A rare maker marked M74,(Most were arsenal marked), with a interesting unit history.
