Mid-WWII Period Japanese NCO Sword, with leather knot and aluminum handle, thin black-painted steel guard, in brown-painted scabbard. Rarely seen is the original leather NCO sword knot with roller buckle. Sword blade and scabbard have matching arsenal numbers, #21836. The 26.5'' blade has a single narrow fuller near the top. Brass habaki collar at the base of the blade. The fuchi at the base of the handle has three arsenal stamps. Locking catch at the base of the handle back edge. Aluminum handle with simulated wrapping and cherry blossom menuki. Wire sarute with the leather sword knot strap attached. Brown-painted steel scabbard with one hanging ring. Overall length is 38''. Condition is good, the blade being mostly bright, with some pitting at the tip and on the sides in a few spots. There are a few very minor edge nicks. Guard shows wear and age to the painted finish. Aluminum grip shows heavy wear to the original paint from use in the field. Leather knot and strap shows age, wear, and cracking, with the leather band at the bottom edge of the knot missing. Scabbard shows heavy wear, scratches, scuffs, and losses to the original painted finish; there is some light rust on the scabbard, but no heavy pitting. Overall a nice example that definitely saw use in WWII. Est.: $600-$800.
