U.S. Model 1855 Percussion Pistol-Carbine, with attachable Shoulder Stock, matching #14 on pistol buttcap and lower stock tang, .58 cal., 12'' round-to-octagon barrel marked ''V/P/eaglehead'' on left side flat, ''1855'' on top flat at breech. Steel captive stirrup ramrod enters stock at front brass barrel band fitted with iron sling swivel. Steel lockplate with integral Maynard tape priming device, spread eagle on primer door, ''U.S. Springfield'' to front, ''1856'' at rear. Brass triggerguard with elongated rear tang that meets brass buttcap with iron lanyard ring, which in turn connects to iron barrel tang. Shoulder stock with brass attachment device, carbine style brass buttplate marked ''US'' on tang, brass base to rear iron sling swivel. Metal parts originally finished bright; oil-finished walnut stocks. Condition is very good having smooth toned metal with pitting around nipple area. Stocks are solid and smooth showing age, marks and a few dings; attachment to pistol is tight. Action is crisp, bore appears clean. Intended for use as a pistol in mounted use and a carbine when on foot, this arm was quickly made obsolete by the more efficient Colt revolvers, yet today is a favorite among collectors and considered scarce as just over 4,000 were made. Est.: $3,000-$5,000. (Antique) (Joe Poyer collection)
