Model 1862 U.S. Naval Cutlass, by Ames, with bright 26'' wide single fuller blade. Blade has inspector's stamps ''D.R. 1862'' at the ricasso area, and ''Made by Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass.'' on the reverse. Handle is grooved wood with a leather covering and no wire wrapping. There are remnants of an old rope lanyard tied around the grip. Large sheet brass knuckle guard is riveted to the solid brass guard, with a brass pommel cap. There are rack numbers stamped into the quillion area of ''14M 726''. (Unable to see any inspector's mark on the pommel due to heavy patina.) Condition is very good with a pleasing dark, uncleaned patina to the brass fittings. Leather covering on the grip shows heavy scuffing and scrapes with losses to the black painted finish. Blade retains much of its bright finish with numerous edge nicks, minor pinprick pitting, and rust stains, especially near the tip. The original leather blade washer is present. A nice unmolested example. No scabbard. Est.: $500-$800.
