Original albumen photograph, 15-5/8 x 20 in., on a mount trimmed to that size with handstamps on verso of a Chicago photographer. In a period gilt frame, 23.5 x 27.5 in., with label on verso “This photograph of Major M.A. Reno, 7th Cavalry, was presented to E.A. Brininstool by Miss Carrie Knowles, niece of Major Reno, on March 11, 1953.”
Earl Alonzo Brininstool (1870-1957) was a “cowboy poet” and noted expert on the Indian Wars, especially the Battle of Little Bighorn, about which he published extensively. His papers are held at the University of Texas in Austin and some items from his collection reside at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth.
An article in the Peoria, Illinois, “Sunday Morning Star,” published July 3, 1927, titled “Peorian, Sister of Major Reno, Tells of Her Brother’s Career, includes an image of this photograph and notes it was hung prominently on the Knowles’ home at 417 Barker Avenue. The article also notes that E.A. Brininstool was in contact with Knowles as part of his quest to study Reno material “from various authentic sources,” in order to get a true picture of Reno as opposed to the then-popular view of him as a coward and supported Knowles’ defense of her brother’s character.
