Cal. 45. NSN. Bbl. 35 1/4" damascus octagon measuring 1 1/16" across flats at muzzle. Top flat has gold inlaid markings "N. ZIEGLER A SOLOTHURN". Barrel near patent style breech plug is bordered with gold inlaid lines and stars. Globe front sight with adjustable leaf peep rear sight. Left side of barrel near breech and top flat of barrel 2" from muzzle are fitted with scope blocks. Ornate curved island lock has gold inlaid banner marked "N. ZIEGLER". Balance of lock has flowing foliate engraving. Graceful C shaped hammer is hand engraved. Double set triggers. Wedge fastened half length cheekpiece target stock with engraved iron Swiss buttplate and engraved forearm cap with long tang that extends to engraved finger rest trigger guard. Toeline of stock has full length pierced engraved plate with sling swivel base. Ornate dragon sideplate is hand engraved. Both sides of stock have ornate engraved iron wedge plates. Wrist of stock has large panels of fish scale checkering with wide clam shell borders leading to fine hand checkering on sides of butt. Both sides of stock have extensive elaborate floral wreath type inlays. Right side of stock has inlaid pearl crest with cross. Cheekpiece has inlaid pearl flower. Wrist of stock behind sideplate has inlaid pearl serpent. Ebony ramrod is held by 2 plain iron pipes. Rear pipe is fitted with swivel base. Weight: 13 lbs., 3.2 oz. CONDITION: reblued barrel shows areas of remaining pitting with surface corrosion in breech area. Stock has cracks in forearm, lock, wrist, butt and toe areas with screw type repair below hammer. Functioning lock and triggers. Hammer cup is chipped. Bore is generally bright and retains strong rifling. PROVENANCE: Estate of Frank Glenn Marsh. (01-21263/DS). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
