Lg. steatite or claystone bird of prey pipes are most often found in the context of Mississippian ceremonial centers. The symbolism of these lg. pipes relate to the everyday activities of a hunter gatherer society. Pipes like this have been found in ceremonial complexes of the Mississippian culture from Georgia to Ohio & as far west as Tennessee. Generally, these pipes are dated from the 11th century to the 13th century. This pipe has not been dated by an expert in Native American culture through scientific means. Pipe measures approx. 11 1/2” x 8 1/4". The bowl diameter is approx. 1 3/4". The stem is fully drilled through. The material appears to be a gray/green steatite. The eyes have been whitened possibly w/ a clay material. CONDITION: there is notable wear around the edge of the bowl including some chipping. The rear of the tail & wings also show many sm. chips. (02-14016/BF). $1,000-2,000.
