Dates: August 1, 2026 - December 31, 2026 except for units involving Department of Defense Lands
(280 – 282, and those portions of Unit 181 on the Naval Air Station) which may only be hunted
during their season dates set by the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners.
Species: Nelson (Desert) Bighorn
Weapon: Any legal weapon may be used throughout the season.
Open Units: For 2026, a maximum number of rams harvested by all specialty tagholders within
each unit group will be set based on the initial unit group quota approved by the Nevada Board of
Wildlife Commissioners in May 2026. Those unit groups with a quota of less than 3 tags (residents
and nonresidents combined) will be closed to all specialty tag holder harvest, including Heritage
tagholders. Heritage tagholders or their licensed guide must call (833) 923-0754 each day before
hunting to determine if any additional unit groups are closed to specialty tag holder harvest.
Nevada has more mountain ranges than any other lower 48 state, and more desert bighorn sheep
than any other jurisdiction in North America. This vast and rugged canvas of both the Mojave and
Great Basin Desert mountains are naturally suited for wild sheep. Through the vision of wildlife
biologists and passionate support from conservation organizations like NBU-Reno, bighorn sheep
restoration and water development efforts were monumental in supporting Nevada’s desert
bighorn population in 2026 at approximately 7,000 from its low of 2,500 in 1960. The most recent
2025 season harvest data showed 7 rams over 168 B&C score. The largest ram unofficially scored
174 B& amp;C and the greatest horn length and base from the 2025 season was 39” and 15 7/8”,
respectively.
