NEW ENGLAND FULL STOCK FLINTLOCK LONG RIFLE
ATTRIBUTED TO S ALLEN. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 39" oct. fitted w/ semi buckhorn rear & brass bead front sights. Has been bored smooth. Indecipherable maker's marks in front of rear sight. Original flintlock is unmarked & has serpentine cock, rounded pan & friction frizzen, feather spring has bulbous finial w/ teat. Lockplate & cock are line border engraved. Rectangular patch box on right side of stock has modified New England spear & ball finial as found on other known rifles by S. Allen. Heavy brass slight crescent buttplate. Has Patch box release button in butt & no return. Brass trigger guard w/ faceted bow has finger spur at grip. Sideplates are classic New England oval & comma style. Stock appears to be cherry & has sm. right hand cheekpiece. Stock extends to muzzle w/ 2" brass cap & is pinned to bbl. Hickory ramrod is held by 2 long beaded brass pipes & thimble. Top of grip has engraved silver oval surrounded by inlet silver wire decoration as found on other S Allen rifles. CONDITION: fair to good w/ restorations. Bbl. & lock are still in original flint & have considerable pitting in dark brown patina. Stock has considerable old finish, but has repairs along comb, left side of lock area & along bbl. channel to thimble. Forend from thimble to muzzle has been replaced. Poor bore. Lock will not cock, but holds & fires at half cock. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19312/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
