NEW ENGLAND STYLE FULL STOCK PERCUSSION RIFLE BY

JAMES JENISON OF SOUTHBRIDGE, MASS. Cal. 52. NSN. James Jenison, apprentice to either Silas Allen or James Mason, opened his own shop in Southbridge Mass. in 1820. He died in 1850. This classic New England rifle appears to be originally made in percussion. It has 45 1/8" swamped octagon barrel mounted with single standing blade V-notch rear and brass bead front sights. Maker’s signature is on top flat in front of sight. Percussion system is drum and nipple. Trade lock partially marked “W…” “ALP…” (Alport?) is line border engraved and has rebated tail. Lock has been converted from flint to percussion. Early style percussion hammer is also line border engraved and patination matches lockplate exceptionally well. Cherrywood full stock extends to within 1/4" of muzzle with brass cap and attaches to barrel with 3 side bolts. Brass mounts include faceted trigger guard with scroll at rear forming grip. Faceted buttplate with release button in top tang for classic New England style brass patchbox with pineapple finial. Stock also features small elliptical right hand cheekpiece. A hickory ramrod mounts through 2 faceted brass pipes and matching thimble. CONDITION: good, original, mostly as found. Iron parts are all an even dark brown pitted patina, except area where maker’s name is engraved, which shows cleaning. Brass is very nicely toned and trigger guard is quite dark. Buttplate and patchbox show some cleaning. Stock retains most of its original finish and has fine hand worn patina at grip and normal balance point. Toe has old square nail repair, otherwise stock is sound with some slight chips around lockplate and 1 or 2 cracks on left side of barrel channel toward muzzle. Barrel has been bored smooth and bore is rusted and pitted. Lock is operable. (01-21675/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,750-2,500.
