NICE QUALITY HALF STOCK PERCUSSION PLAINS RIFLE
MARKED P. S. J. & CO. ON LOCK. Cal. 450 groove diameter. NSN. Bbl. 35” heavy oct. holding semi buckhorn single leaf rear sight & German silver front sight is not maker marked. Bbl. fitted w/ under rib w/ 2 plain pipes holding hickory ramrod. Breech plug scroll engraved & has 2 inlaid brass bands. Breech iron is mostly scroll engraved. Front spring lock marked “P. S. J. & Co” has open shaded scroll engraving at front & rear flanking engraved scene of stag & hounds. Hammer is carved in scaly dragon motif. Triggers are dbl. set. American walnut stock measures 13 7/8” over engraved steel crescent buttplate. Stock features secondary toeplate on its flat return, swept shadow line right hand cheekpiece inlaid w/ German silver recumbent stag. All other furniture is of iron. Right side of butt has fancy engraved patchbox w/ hunting scene on cover. Engraved sideplate is fancy shaped. Trigger guard has scrolled grip. Stock attaches to bbl. w/ 2 side bolts through oval steel escutcheons. CONDITION: good, original as found. Rifle is quite dirty & can certainly use a judicious cleaning. Bbl. appears to retain most of its original brown, one ramrod pipe resoldered. Lock is mostly gray to brown patina. Patchbox lightly cleaned. Wood retains most of what appears to be its original varnish finish w/ a scattering of marks & dings. Checkering worn. Bore looks good, somewhat shiny w/ strong rifling (needs cleaning).
