SHORT RIFLE ENGRAVED "TOWNSEND WHELEN" ON FLOORPLATE WITH SCOPE. Cal. 30-06. S# G & H 1268. Bbl. 22" Classic G & H sporter lightweight fitted w/ band on sling eye & front ramp holding silver bead. Top of bbl. is engraved "No 1268 Griffin & Howe, Inc. New York" (ca 1933). Caliber is at left rear. 1903 Springfield action has had rear tang contoured & is fitted w/ Lyman 48 receiver sight & G & H side mt. Bolt knob is checkered. Bolt body is damascened. Bottom metal has trigger guard thinned & shaped. Front of floorplate has checkered thumb piece, & floorplate was engraved at later date. "Townsend Whelen" is in script. Very nicely marbled European walnut steel capped pistol grip stock measures 13 5/8" over checkered & engraved steel buttplate w/ trap. Stock features pre war styling w/ dbl. shadow line right hand Whelen cheekpiece, horn forend tip & well cut point pattern checkering at grip & forend. A vacant silver oval & sling eye are on toeline. Rifle is mounted w/ Hensoldt KLEIN - DIALYT 2 3/4X scope w/ crosshair & post reticle in G & H 2 lever rings & slide w/ windage adj. CONDITION: lightly & expertly refinished. Metal parts retain nearly all of a factory style rust blue. Stock has nearly all of an atypical varnish finish w/ a few subsequent marks. Col. Whelen's name is engraved through blue on floorplate. Bright shiny bore w/ sharp rifling throughout, action smooth, damascening remains strong but shows some wear. Scope shows some minor marks in exterior, optically clear. (19-5442/MGM26).
