(THE PURDEY OF THE NORTH) WITH EXTRA BARRELS AND CASE. Cal. 12 Ga., 2 3/4". S# 8241. Bbls. 28" & 30" Damascus, both sets are engraved "W. R. Pape. Newcastle on Tyne". "Inventor of Choke Boring" (only on the 28" set) on flat, slightly swamped pigeon ribs, w/ doll's head extensions. Bbl. flats are stamped w/ Birmingham black powder proofs & 2003 Birmingham reproofs for 2 3/4" chambers on 28" bbls. & 1979 reproofs on 30". Bottom ribs are marked w/ importers name & address (Woodcock Hill). Sling eyes are soldered to bottom ribs. Casehardened Anson & Deeley boxlock action (use no. 13889) features automatic safety, pivoting third fastener & dbl. triggers. Action is engraved w/ 80% coverage nicely cut open scroll w/ in geometric borders. S# is on water table & on scroll engraved trigger guard tang. Very nicely marbled & lightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14" over ribbed horn buttplate. Checkering at grip is of fancy pattern w/ foliate lobed extensions toward butt. Side panels are checkered & have sm. tear shaped drop points. A vacant silver oval & sling eye are on toeline. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Bore diameters: 28", left - .733, choke .010 (IC), right - .726, choke .006 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .022, right - .030. Bore diameters: 30", left - .737, .044 (extra full), right - .726, .025 (mod). Wall thickness: left - .023, right - .030. DAC: 1 9/16". DAH: 2 1/16". Cast about 1/2" off. LOP: 14". WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 12 oz. (30"). UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: period oak & leather case w/ brass corners, central medallion & dual sliding bolt & push button closure. Case is lined in green felt w/ reproduction Pape paper label in lid. Case has been conserved w/ shellac, new straps, handle & relined interior. CONDITION: as refurbished. Bbls. retain approx. 80% fine restored brown w/ very fine definition to pattern. 28" Bbls. have subsequent silvering & spotting, mostly on left side of breech end & around muzzles. Action retains nearly all "best" re color w/ slight silvering, engraving clear. Top lever, floorplate & trigger guard retain nearly all of a charcoal reblue, engraving softened. Stocks retain most of an oil refinish w/ some light marks, checkering lightly cleaned. Buttplate is new & nicely fitted. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. (01-17166/MGM1).
