Rare Newton Arms Co. Model 1916 high quality take-down bolt-action rifle chambered in .30 Newton. The barrel is stamped "Newton Arms Co. INC. Buffalo, NY. .30 Newton" and "Patents Pending". One of the 2400 early Buffalo, NY addressed rifles The .30 Newton cartridge was designed by Charles Newton in 1913, based on a German caliber of the period, the 11.2x72 Schuler. The Newton Arms Company was the only manufacturer of commercial rifles chambered for this cartridge.To dismount from the stock, the floor plate release button is pressed which swings the hinged floor plate down. Using the floor plate like a wrench, three turns loosens the front receiver screw nut. Pressure on the snap button in the forearm releases the barrel. Mounted on a nicely figured Blued finish, 24" tapered barrel with blade/bead front sight and two leaf adjustable flip rear sight, both are dovetailed into the bases, double set triggers, hinged floorplate, knurled, straight bolt handle, 6-lug bolt, 3 position thumb safety, integral knurled bases in receiver for optics. There is a factory sight base for a Lyman 48 aperture sight on the cocking device but the sight is missing. Nicely figured one piece pistol grip stock with checkering at wrist and forearm with schaebel tip, steel buttplate and grip cap. Today these rifle are considered to be some of the best quality sporting rifles manufactured in America. This rifle is featured and profusely illustrated on page 65, 66 and 67 in the book "The Mauser Archive" by Jon Speed. Action is smooth, blue is about 94% with some minor scratches, light handling wear, wood is near excellent with a few very minor scratches and the bore is overall good, the rifling is a little worn, needs cleaning. Matching serial numbers on the bolt and underside of receiver.
