SQUARE BRIDGE ACTION, RIBBED PENCIL BBL. & POP UP CHEEKPIECE. Cal. 8 x 60 (323 groove diameter). S# 99788. Bbl. 24", part oct. fitted w/ integral matted rib marked "Mauser-Werk A. G. Oberndorf am NECKAR" on unmatted portion. A one standing two folding leaf rear sight & silver bead front are dovetailed through. This attractive bbl. is exceptionally slim & measures 0.525 at muzzle. Standard length Model 98 commercial Mauser action has stippled receiver ring & checkered raised square bridge. Mauser markings are on left side wall & action is dovetailed & bridge adapted for factory scope mnt. There are 1928 Vienna proofs on bbl. & action along w/ original German proofs. Bolt has long cocking piece & unaltered handle w/ pear shaped knob. Bottom metal is fitted w/ dbl. set triggers & has hinged floorplate retained by lever. A secondary finger spur is attached to trigger guard bow, possibly original. Stock of nicely figured & lightly streaked European walnut measures 15 1/4" over old, thin "silver" type pad w/ thick base plate. Usual point pattern checkering is at grip & on forend which has a sm. schnabel. Stock also has pressed steel grip cap & usual sling loop which matches that on bbl. Stock has been fitted w/ nicely made & well matched pop up cheekpiece to raise height of comb when scope is in use. Release button is on right side of butt. CONDITION: fine, metal parts retaining over 80% of what appears to be original blue w/ some scattered silvering on sharp edges & some flecking mostly on floorplate. Scope release mechanism & bolt stop retain most of their original fire blue. Stock retains nearly all of an old oil refinish which is most likely contemporary w/ Vienna proofs. Bore is bright & shiny w/ sharp rifling throughout. Action is smooth. A fine commercial Mauser w/ some interesting features. (21-1166/MGM). CURIO. $2,500-3,500.
