OLD WESTERN STAGE COACH STRONGBOX FROM
THE MID 1800S. An exceptionally heavy cast iron strongbox measuring 13 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 9". It has a hinged, lockable lid (no key) & features 2 folding handles on the sides of the box. Both the lid & the base are reinforced to dbl. thickness. This early strongbox was discovered in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area & was originally painted black throughout. An old typewritten tag accompanies the box that states “This old Western strongbox was used to carry gold bars on the stagecoaches that traversed Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, (etc.) during the 1870s. It came from the well-known collection of Western Americana owned by Jim Servern of Tucson, author of the “Bible” on the Colt revolver.”. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: type written tag. CONDITION: the box shows some wear & abrasions. Original paint/finish is approx. 60% intact. The hinge functions well but the operation of the lock cannot be checked due to the lack of a key.
