ORIGINAL FLINTLOCK U.S. MODEL 1816 TYPE III

Cal. 69. NSN. 42” Barrel is stamped with “P”, eagle head & “V” proofs at rear along with “D”, “P” & “24”. Tang is dated “1832”. Lock with “0” assembly mark on all interior & exterior parts is stamped with eagle over “US” in front of reinforced cock & is marked “SPRING” “FIELD” “1832” on tail. Lock features brass inset pan, bridled friction frizzen & feather spring with bulbous finial. Walnut stock is iron mounted & attaches to barrel with 3 spring retained bands. Triggerguard has swell at front as mount for sling loop. Buttplate is stamped “US”. Inspector’s marking on left side of stock are “EG” & “JW”. Another stamp at rear of triggerguard tang is “JS”. CONDITION: good to fine. Barrel retains old brown finish over considerable overall deep pitting. Lock & parts are gray to brown patina. Furniture is also heavily pitted & has been browned. Stock is fine with what appears to be its original dry oil finish. Inspector’s marks are sharp & clear. No noted cracks or breaks, just a few heavy marks along barrel channel toward muzzle. Top jaw & screw are missing from lock. Bore is shiny with light pitting toward muzzle. Lock is fine. Most Type III Model 1816 rifles were converted to percussion. Examples in original flint are very scarce. (01-21387/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
