ORNATE MEDITERRANEAN STYLE MIQUELET LOCK

BLUNDERBUSS PISTOL. Cal. approx. 65. NSN. Bbl. 8 7/8" of stepped octagon configuration with flared cannonade muzzle and a multi faceted breech section. Inside muzzle diameter is 1 1/4". Top barrel flat has a weak illegible name followed by a star. Early iron miquelet lock of the type that was developed in Spain in the mid 16th century and was widely used throughout the Mediterranean area. Left side has a 7" iron belt hook as was commonly used on naval boarding pistols. Iron lock features a ring cocking piece on hooked hammer that engages with an external mainspring. Hammer and pan bolster have floral hand engraving. Hardwood stock with extensive pierced and segmented brass inlay having floral pattern carving and engraving. Brass plates are accented by brass tacks. The ornate brass ornamentation covers butt, wrist, floorplate, forearm areas as well as barrel bands and buttcap. Toeline has brad attached mouldered brass trigger plate. CONDITION: metal has faded gray appearance showing small spots of light pitting. Stock shows cracks and chips in lock, sideplate and forearm areas. Several ornamental brass tacks are missing. Modern replacement wood ramrod. Functioning lock. Bore is dark and heavily pitted.
