OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF A NEW BERLIN GUNSMITH

CHARLES BAUM TAKEDOWN RIFLE FEATURED IN "THE KENTUCKY RIFLE & ME" BY EDITH COOPER.
Cal. 36 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 40" full oct. initialed “CB” on the top flat of the bbl. w/ 6" spiral weave & teardrop engraved patterns around fixed rear sight. Overall length 54 1/2". Charles Baum was producing percussion Kentucky rifles in the New Berlin area from 1832-1846. This very rifle is pictured on plate #79, pg. 87 of Edith G. Cooper’s book “The Kentucky Rifle and Me” when it was still in the T.J. Cooper collection. This rifle has a brass 4 piece patchbox w/ incredible 13 piercings, 6" elegant sculptured tapering brass comb plate, 7" brass toeplate w/ 4 piercings, 5 1/2" brass saddle plate which separates in the middle so the forend may be removed for cleaning & 38 silver inlays. Engraved percussion lock was made by Joseph Golcher, PA & has dbl. set triggers. Dark stained stock is curly maple & is nicely incised carved to rear of the cheekpiece. This is a rare takedown type Kentucky rifle, where the entire forend can be easily removed for cleaning the bbl. Charles Baum is one of the Baum family of gunsmiths & he produced percussion as well as flint rifles. His guns are often highly inlaid. Charles is the only Baum assessed in New Berlin as a gunsmith after the 1830s. CONDITION: outstanding original condition, the only flaw being a sm. 1/2" piece of wood missing along the bbl. above lock, a problem area on many Kentucky rifles. Mechanically functional, sharp rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19527/RG). ANTIQUE. $8,000-15,000.
