PISTOLS BY FRANCISCO ARANA BARRELS BY JOSEPH GARRO. Cal. 65. NSN. The 9 5/8" blued barrels have octagonal breech sections that transition to round through relief scroll engraved bands, muzzles are of cannon type. Breech sections are deeply stamped with gold poincon marked "JPH" "GA" "RRO" surmounted by a crown. This cartouche has gold fleur de lis stamps at sides and top. Gold inlaid scrolls offset "EXMO. SENOR" "MARQUES" "DE QUINTANA" flush gold inlaid on flats. Touchhole is gold lined. Breech plug tang is deeply scroll engraved. Bright polished miquelet lock has bridled friction frizzen and is stamped with gold poincon marked "FCO." "ARA" "NA" (most likely Francisco Arana working in Madrid around 1803). European walnut stocks with iron mounted knob grips have well filed trigger guards having relief foliate finials. Bows are engraved "ALBERDI". Stocks have fine quality relief floral carving around top tangs and thimbles. Steel sideplates are nicely shaped, stocks are pinned to barrels. Green and white plush cloth protectors are tacked to stocks behind locks. Live oak ramrods with horn tips mount through beaded pipes and matching thimbles. CONDITION: exceptionally fine, barrels retaining over 90% original blue with a considerable scattering of freckling on one barrel and minor freckling on the other. Locks retain nearly all their bright polish, steel furniture shows considerable light staining and cleaning. Stocks retain nearly all their original oil finish, carving is crisp. Bores are bright and shiny pistols don't appear to have been fired. One ramrod is missing. Stock of one pistol has split in wood at bottom front of lockplate. (01-21937/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,500-7,500.
