Ornate Antique Afghan Jezail Percussion Pistol, NVSN, .60 cal., 7.125'' round barrel with remnant front post and no rear sight; flat lockplate is unmarked (any original markings being obscured by heavy pitting); fittings include sheet metal trigger guard having dot-and-diamonds engraving on loop and long tangs tacked to the stock, steel button-tip ramrod; hardwood fullstock has the distinctive Jezail curved butt, numerous decorative bone inlays, incised carving at rear, and no buttplate. Pistol shows typical indigenous workmanship, was constructed utilizing a shortened barrel, lock and ramrod likely taken from a damaged British military percussion pistol, with a hammer adapted specifically to this gun. Condition is about good, the iron surfaces show a deep brown patina with scattered dings and moderate to heavy pitting (esp. on lockplate). Stock is sound and smooth showing general signs of wear and use, with all inlays intact. Action is very strong; smoothbore shows heavy pitting/erosion. With its distinctive curved butt firmly grasped in the hand, this pistol could have been fired from horseback during the heat of battle or while on the run. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)(John Ackerman collection)
