Outstanding Finely Relief Engraved Teshner/Collath of Frankfurt Under Lever Cape Gun with Extra Damascus Shotgun Barrels, #5276, 14 Gauge/11.15 x 65R cal., 27-5/8" solid rib barrels, with dovetailed platinum tipped low-profile blade front sight, dovetailed fixed "U"-notch rear sight, gold inlaid rings and ornamentation at the breech on both barrels. Collath action with double triggers, extractors, oversized safety lever, game scenes on two sides, gold inlaid family monogram on the tang. Finely checkered deluxe walnut two-piece straight grip stock with sling swivels, horn underlever, exaggerated trigger guard with hand rest, and smooth horn buttplate; providing a 13.5" LOP to the front trigger. Includes an additional set of 14 ga., 30" Damascus shotgun barrels with 2-1/2" chambers, brass bead front sight, and wide-notched fixed rear sight. Extra barrels are in very good condition with an illegible barrel address in gold, and the same decorative treatment of rings and ornamentation as displayed on the Cape Gun; bores with scattered light to moderate erosion, primarily in the left barrel. The Cape Gun is in fine overall condition. Barrels have a pleasing, even patina mixed with toning blue finish; with a few spots of mild pitting, gold accents show only light wear. Receiver displays outstanding 90%-95% coverage in relief engraved game scenes, depicting wild boar on the right side, and stag with doe on the left. The top shows a fox looking over his shoulder as he pins a stolen chicken. The quality of the engraved scenes are extraordinary, both in their complexity and detail. Stock is in fine condition, with scattered indentations and impressions. Cheekpiece shows bruises and wear along the edge; toe with a few deeper dings, and a chip at the buttplate toe. Action functions well and locks up securely with the Jones underlever fastening system. Bores are very good with the rifled barrel displaying well-defined rifling. The consignor has provided information attributing the gold crest on the top tang as that of Johan Metzen, 1848-1915, a prior owner who directed the maker to include his family monogram. A fine example of early German gun engraver's art. Est. $2,000-$4,000. (Antique)
