PORTRAIT OF THE SCHOONER DONNA T. BRIGGS. An oil on canvas signed & dated “S. F. M. Badger – 98”, lower left. Ship’s portrait is an oil on canvas depicting an American three mast schooner in full sail off the coast. Sailing in calm seas, beneath a clear blue sky w/ clouds in the background. Viewer sees a headland w/ lighthouse in the distance off the bow of the ship. The painting is housed in a gilt wood frame. Solon Badger was born in Boston and lived in Charlestown, Mass. He was self-taught as an artist & chose his subjects from viewing & studying ships in Boston Harbor. He often used ship’s plans to actually layout & design proportionally the ships that he painted. In his younger years he lodged w/ William P. Stubbs who was another well-known maritime artist known best for ship portraits. PROVENANCE: This painting was acquired directly from the family of the last captain of the Donna Briggs. SIZE: 19” x 29-1/4”. Overall 24-1/2” x 34-1/2”. CONDITION: painting has been professionally cleaned w/ light inpainting. There are no restored tears or damage that had been noted. Painting retains a very strong & vibrant palette.
