SMITH OF LONDON IN AS FOUND CONDITION NEEDING RESTORATION. Cals. approx. 64. Both NSN. There are a large number of listed London gun makers named "Smith". Most likely these pistols were made by James of St. Martins Lane circa 1796. They are of high quality & have 10" swamped oct. bbls. w/ under ribs engraved "SMITH LONDON" on top flats. Touch holes are gold lined & there are gold bands at breech ends. Breech irons have integral V notch rear sights & are engraved w/ "Stand of Arms" & some floral type motifs. Locks w/ chamfered plates & rebated tails have feather engraving on chamfers are also engraved "Smith" under full waterproof pans. Locks are fitted w/ French cocks & also feature back sliding safeties, bridled rollered frizzens & have feather springs w/ bulbous finials. Triggers are set. Stocks of European root walnut checkered bag grips & are iron mounted. Trigger guards have classic pineapple finials & armorial engraving on bows. CONDITION: fair, needing restoration. Bbl. of 1 pistol is missing underrib, ramrod & pipe. Both cocks have had heads broken off w/ newly welded on replacements & missing top jaws & screws. Furniture is cleaned to a silver gray as are bbls. & lock plates. Stocks have what appears to be an old oiled refinish & show considerable wear. Safeties do not engage, they are probably gummed. Front mounting screw of 1 trigger guard is missing. Bores are shiny. (01-20117(2)/MGM). BOTH ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
