OR TARGET PISTOLS BY RICHARD CONSTABLE IN PHILADELPHIA WITH CASE. Cal. 45. NSN. Bbls. 10". oct. twist w/ under ribs engraved “CONSTABLE PHILADELPHIA, PA” on top flats. Bottoms of bbls. stamped w/ Birmingham black powder proofs. Patent breeches w/ vented platinum blow outs have scroll engraving on tops & U notch rear sights. Breech irons scroll engraved. Front spring percussion locks fitted w/ flat faced serpentine hammers have sliding safeties. Locks scroll engraved w/ in geometric borders & “CONSTABLE” is in front of hammers. Stump figured American walnut half stocks have horn caps & flared checkered grips w/ engraved steel caps. Set triggers are in trigger plates w/ stylized pineapple finials & scroll engraved trigger guards have finger spurs. Rectangular silver crest plates are at tops of grips & stocks attached to bbls. w/ captive side bolts through oval, silver escutcheons. Ebony ramrods w/ brass tips have brass tails. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: guns are housed in oak case w/ dual pivoting hook closure & rnd. brass medallion in lid. Case is lined in purple velvet & reproduction label is on lid. Guns fit case well. Accessories include leather covered powder flask by Dixon, reproduction pewter oil bottle, ebony handled turn screw, rosewood loading rod, nutcracker type iron ball mold marked “38” & an empty tin of Goldman’s percussion caps. Covered compartments w/ turned walnut knobs hold balls, patches & an unmarked cap tin. CONDITION: bbls. w/ most of a renewed brown finish have good definition to pattern. All other iron parts considerably cleaned now exhibit gray to brown patina. Engraving on bbls. faint. Stocks have old oil refinish w/ some subsequent marks. Checkering somewhat worn, does not appear to have been recut. Bores are very good. Locks operable. Safeties work. One trigger sets, the other will not. Hammers are loose on tumblers. Stock of one pistol is cracked through sideplate area, otherwise they appear sound. Exterior of case refinished w/ some subsequent scratches. Cloth replaced in lid. Bottom compartment cloth very good to fine w/ minor compressions & some fading. Accessories are generally good. (01-19859/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-7,000.
