Rare to find original "estribos de cruz" (cruciform stirrups), popular in New Spain (Texas & Mexico) to show status of a horseman. This pair originally much longer looking just like the cross, have been cut to lessen weight and by Catholic royal decree in 1772 to be banned & deemed sacrilegious due to their religious symbolism. This is not a matching pair but same size and similar wrought iron design and authentic. CONDITION: very good overall, heavy iron patina. PROVENANCE: Estate collection of Compton LaBauve Jr. (02-26483-1/JS). NON-GUN. $800-1,200.
