PEARL HARBOR SALVAGED 4 PIECE DINNER SERVICE FOR

REAR ADMIRAL WILLIAM FURLONG OF THE USS OGLALA. On December 7, 1941, Japanese air forces attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The USS Oglala, after being strafed numerous times, as well as torpedoed amidships, sank while being moored next to the light cruiser, USS Helena. Admiral Furlong survived the attack & from December 12th to the end of the war was placed in charge of Pearl Harbor Navy Yard overseeing all salvage operations & repairs to ships that could return to active duty. The USS Oglala was raised, repaired & saw service to the end of WWII & beyond. The Admiral’s dinner service was salvaged from his sunken ship & returned to the Admiral’s possession. Admiral Furlong retired from active duty in July of 1945. All pieces have a blue border w/ the plates also having an inner border. Each piece boldly displays a Rear Admiral’s 2 star flag. The service includes a 9 3/4" dinner plate, a 7 1/8" side plate, a 6" saucer & a 4" handled coffee cup. A very rare opportunity to acquire dinner pieces from a flag officer w/ substantial & heroic Pearl Harbor history. CONDITION: all pieces show use but very light wear & no damage.
