Cal. 8mm Pieper. S# 355*. Bbl. 19.8" with dovetailed inverted V sight on nose cap. Mfg. 1896-1897; originally designed for 7.65 Mauser then 8mm Pieper in 1895. Made by Henri Pieper of Belgium and supplied to Mexico for Rural Police; some examples police marked on top of frame (this one not marked). Cartridge is similar to 7.62 Nagant as it is also a gas sealing cartridge with bullet fully encased. Cylinder rotates clockwise and swings out to the right as released by Colt style latch. Interior of crane area on frame, crane, extractor, cylinder, cylinder latch, trigger and tangent rear sight (0-900 meters) have matching 343 assembly numbers. References state less than 350 made, yet this is numbered 355 followed by a 5 pointed star (represented by *). Very handy carbine with 36" overall length; main detriment was slow loading of its 9 rd. cylinder and relatively slow rate of fire. Operation is double action. Fine touches are checkering on hammer, trigger and tab of buttplate cover enclosing area for cleaning rod. Star above P proof on top left front of frame, crane exterior, top of buttplate and face of cylinder along with Leige proof. Forend is light colored hard wood with grasping grooves and nose cap. Darker buttstock with metal buttplate. Light colored oval wood filler on left side of buttstock; likely where swivel was attached, yet other examples are plain in this area. Top tang marked "H. PIEPER Bte LIEGE". CONDITION: good to very good general appearance having refinished stock set (light handling marks) plus all metal finish in the white with cleaned surfaces; prior spots of oxidation. Firing function is intermittent being most operative in single action. Good bright bore with wear and areas of light pitting. (01-22066/NW). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
