POWDER HORN OF “CALEB HOWE” 1750.
Small 8 1/2" pistol or priming horn carved around perimeter of base “CALEB HOWE HIS HORN” & below a sailing ship w/ British flag: “VMo N. HAMPS”. A lg. well carved British coat of arms, a row of houses & initials “F. B”, “H. R”, L. G.”, “H”, & S.B.” complete the scrimshaw design filling virtually all the usable surface. Crosshatched design is found on bottom border & notched drapery motif at top, 3 carved rings on spout. Caleb Howe born December 31, 1723, Framingham, Mass, was killed by Indians June 28, 1755, Hinsdale, New Hampshire. Caleb Howe was a veteran of the 1st French & Indian wars in the 1740s. In 1750, the date of this horn, Caleb & his family lived in Fort Sawtell & he worked as Constable. CONDITION: good to very good overall, well patinaed surface w/ minor reductions & wear, lobed extension at base is broken at the hole for lanyard. Residual color can be seen in traces where once polychromed. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (02-13785/JS). $3,000-5,000.
