OFFICERS SWORD WITH SILVER MOUNTED SCABBARD. Overall length: 40 1/4". Blade length: 32". Blade has a single wide fuller w/ a single 13" narrow fuller above. Blade is etched w/ foliate designs & a lg. spread winged eagle on 1 side w/ "U.S." on the opposite side. Blade is stamped at the ricasso, "W. CLAUBERG (knight) SOLINGEN". The opposite ricasso is etched, "H.G. HAMLIN, JR. CINCINNATI. O." who was the retailer of this sword. Gilded brass semi-basket hilt pierced w/ foliate motifs & a lg. "U S". Knuckle bow is embellished at the joint w/ the oak leaf decorated pommel cap. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. An attractive scabbard having a brass throat w/ "U S", suspension loops & highly embellished drag. The sword mounts are solid silver engraved w/ foliate & floral motifs & "U S". The body of the scabbard has a deep brown finish. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray cleaned finish. Etching remains strong. Hilt shows traces of original gilding. Grips is complete & wire appears complete but is slightly dislodged in places. Scabbard shows light wear overall w/ a sm. dent between the first & second mounts. (02-17526/BF). $2,000-3,000.
