Post-Civil War Metallic Cartridge Altered Sharps Model 1863 Breechloading Carbine, #54052, .50-70 CF cal., 22" round barrel with pinned blade front and folding-leaf rear sights, marked "Sharps Rifle/Manufg. Co./Hartford, Conn." ahead of rear sight and "New Model 1863" behind; straight breech receiver has integral automatic pellet primer, standard Lawrence and Sharps markings, left-side sling ring and mount, serpentine trigger guard/operating lever; oil-finished walnut forestock has single spring-retained band, matching buttstock a crescent buttplate. Mfg'd mid-1860s, altered and refinished ca. 1867 at the Sharps Rifle factory. Condition is very good retaining traces of barrel blue and case colors but generally gray gunmetal showing scattered pitting (esp. front half of barrel, left-side receiver, buttplate). Barrel markings are soft due to factory refinish. Stocks are sound showing marks and gouges of age and military use and lack inspector mark. Action is smooth, original 6-groove bore shows light erosion and good rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)
