Post-War Transitional Smith & Wesson .38/44 Outdoorsman Double Action Revolver, #S70498, .38 S&W Spec. cal., 6.5" pinned barrel, blue finish, checkered diamond center walnut Magna grips. Patridge front sight has been modified by cutting the front edge at an angle, with a square-notch fully adjustable rear sight, color case hardened checkered hammer and serrated trigger. Frame and yoke with matching assembly numbers (12027). Barrel, cylinder, extractor, and back of right grip are numbered to the gun. Shipped to Mine & Smelter, Denver, CO., Sept. 23, 1946; with factory letter signed by S&W Historian Roy G. Jinks. Letter verifies barrel length and finish. In a two-piece maroon Outdoorsman box that is numbered in pencil to another gun (S71311), bottom is also stamped "Target". Condition is about fine retaining approx. 93%-95% factory blue. Muzzle wear, and wear to high points of the cylinder accounts for much of the finish loss. Factory lettering is clear. Approx. 85% case colors remain. Grips with scattered shallow indentations and small handling marks, checkering is primarily crisp. Action cycles smoothly and cylinder locks up securely. Very good bore is bright with well-defined rifling. Box is good and shows signs of moderate age and storage wear, with some creasing to the edges; one of the upper corners is split, end label is clear. Est.: $1,500-$1,800. (C&R/PPT)
