Post-War Transitional Smith & Wesson .38/44 Outdoorsman Double Action Revolver, #S70079, .38 S&W Spec. cal., 6.5" pinned barrel, blue finish, checkered diamond center walnut Magna grips, Patridge front and square-notched fully adjustable rear sight, with color case hardened checkered hammer and serrated trigger. Either the frame or yoke was likely mis-stamped as the assembly numbers are marked as 10556 and 10566. Barrel, cylinder, extractor, and back of right grip are numbered to the gun. Interesting that the factory letter states that this gun was shipped in 1946 to "Nobody", as it is open on the records. It mentions that this could be due to an oversight by the shipping clerk or that the gun was stolen. The letter does not list any of the revolver's features. In a two-piece maroon Outdoorsman Target box that is numbered in pencil to another gun (S69697). Condition is about fine retaining approx. 92%-94% factory blue. Muzzle wear, cylinder index line, and a little finish wear to the back of the frame accounts for much of the finish loss. Factory lettering is clear. Approx. 80% case colors remain. Grips with scattered shallow handling marks, checkering is primarily crisp. There is a very small chip missing from the lower back edge of the left grip. Action is crisp and cycles smoothly, cylinder locks up securely. Bore appears near excellent, bright with well-defined rifling. Box shows moderate age and wear. The corners are intact, end label is clear.  Est.:  $1,500-$1,800. (C&R/PPT)
