Pair of Saw-Handled Percussion Dueling Pistols, by T.J. Mortimer, .58 cal. smoothbore, 10'' octagonal barrels, nickel silver bands and platina ovoid near breech area. Top of barrels marked ''St. James's St't London''. Lockplates are marked ''T.J. Mortimer, St. James's St.'' Lightly engraved lockplates and hammers with safety catches. Upper tangs and rear portion of saw-handled grips with sighting grooves; screw slots index to match. Stand of Arms, engraved triggerguards with pineapple finials, as well as with engraved silver inserts to butts. Saw-handled walnut halfstocks with silver wedge escutcheons and forend tips. Wedge escutcheons are silver as are forend caps. Pistols date from approx. 1830. Condition is very good. Exposed metal surfaces of barrels with moderate even toning. One pistol with deformation to ramrod channel and retaining a later-made replacement rod; other pistol with fine ebony brass-tipped rammer. Locks show faint traces of case color details in protected areas, and good crisp engraving remains. Both hammerspurs appear to have been repaired at one point. Stock with even smoothing to checkering and light general knackering, with no real losses. Silver ovoid discs to right sides of stocks remain blank and unadorned, as do discs at breech. Actions are good, with clean smooth bores. Est.: $4,000-$6,000/pair. (Antique)
