Pre-Civil War Sharps Model 1853 Percussion Carbine, in the "John Brown Raid" Serial Range, #16124, .52 cal., 21.5" barrel marked with maker's name and address at top, with standard carbine sights; "Slant Breech" receiver with 9.5" sling bar/ring at left and integral Sharps patent pellet priming device at right is marked "Sharps/Patent/1848" and serial number at top tang, "Sharp's (sic)/Patent/1852" on back-action lock, "29" on trigger guard/operating lever. Oil-finished walnut forend has single brass band, matching buttstock a 4.25" brass patchbox (marked "9/61" inside) and semi-crescent buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1854-57. Condition is very good showing smooth gray/brown gunmetal (bit of light pitting on lockplate), age-toned brass, good edges and markings. Stocks are sound showing light age and use marks, added varnish. Action is crisp, bore shows overall light etching, deep/sharp rifling. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)
