FLINT PISTOL BY JOSEPH BUNNEY OF LONDON. Cal. 56. NSN. The 5 1/4" bbl. has fine cannon turnings and wrench lug on bottom. Boxlock flint action has reinforced cock and frizzen with hidden spring. Trigger has nicely filed backward turning tip. Trigger guard slides forward as a safety locking cock. Bottom of action is stamped with Birmingham proofs. Action has some scroll engraving within line and geometric borders. "BUNNEY" is in ribbon on left side and "LONDON" is on right (Joseph working in Birmingham 1766-1825). Rounded and flared grip has silver grotesque mask on butt stamped with Birmingham hallmarks with date code "I" (1781-2). No maker's mark is found. Grip is further decorated with inlet scrolling silver wire, and a vacant silver oval is at top. CONDITION: good, metal parts with old cleaning to gray, engraving somewhat softened. Grip is good with some marks, silver lightly tarnished. Some minor bits of inlay are missing. Mechanically good except cock will not hold at full. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor.
