RARE 16 GA. HAND MADE DAVID KIRKWOOD SIDELOCK
SHOTGUN. Cal. 16 Ga. S# 1240. David Kirkwood offered guns in all gauges, down to 20, most known examples are either 10 or 12 ga. Very few smaller gauge guns are known. This 16 ga. has 28" Damascus bbls. engraved "D. Kirkwood Boston" on slightly raised game rib. Bbl. flats are stamped "D. KIRKWOOD" & bottoms of bbls. have Kirkwood's proof, "K" & Birmingham provisional proofs. Adj. loop is stamped "PAT" "NOV. 27. 83". Action features automatic safety along w/ Kirkwood time proven square shouldered dolls head w/ sliding bolt fastener coupled w/ a typical Purdey dbl. lug system used in these later guns. Action is nicely filed & is engraved w/ 70% coverage varying sized scroll. "D. Kirkwood" is on each lockplate. Kirkwood's sidelock design as used in most of his later guns has slim profile & back spring locks w/ dipped edge lockplates. Trigger guard w/ scroll on bow has S# on tang. Very finely marbled European walnut rnd. knob pistol grip buttstock measures 13 5/8" over original checkered horn buttplate. Checkering at grip is of fancy pattern as illustrated in Kirkwood's advertising. (It is thought that David's daughter, Margaret, checkered these later guns). Matching splinter forend w/ inset ebony tip has spring tension release. Bore diameters: left - .679, choke .012 (mod), right - .672, choke .005 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .025, right - .030. DAC: 1 3/4". DAH: 3 1/8". Cast approx. 1/2" off. LOP: 13 5/8". WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 2 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: tan Leg o' Mutton L & C case in good condition. CONDITION: bbls. mostly silver gray w/ traces of Damascus finish. Action also gray, lightly frosted, engraving clear. Some scattered pitting on trigger guard. Stock has been broken through wrist & repaired, checkering recut, drop points worn almost smooth w/ a few light handling marks in newly applied finish. Original horn buttplate has some moth damage. There are some repairs at rear of forend wood. Despite all this, mechanically sound, action is tight, bbls. are on face. Shiny bores over a few scattered pits. (01-17165/MGM22). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
