RARE 1814 DATED 2nd MODEL VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY
FLINTLOCK PISTOL. Cal.64. S# marked “222” on bottom & matching inside stock & sideplate. 10” Rnd. bbl. Standard configuration 16” overall, patterned after model 1805 Harper’s Ferry w/ lock makings: “VIRGINIA” forward of cock & “RICHMOND / 1814” vertically at tail. About 4000 pistols were made at the Virginia Manufactory 1805-1815, about 2000 each of the 1st model & the elegant 2nd model (made 1812-1815). Only 603 were made in 1814 & there are very few original flintlock survivors as most were converted to percussion for the Civil War. This is a fine all original example w/ great collection history rarely offered in original flint configuration w/ superior markings. CONDITION: good-very good overall, iron has dark patina & pitting, good discernible lock markings, brass cleaned w/ medium mustard patina. Stock is sound w/ hand worn patina, chip repair at butt. Mainspring has welded repair. Brass buttcap screw was replaced w/ original. Mechanics functional, though mainspring weak, clear smooth pitted bore. PROVENANCE: ex-James Wertenberger collection; ex-Bob Howard collection; Greg Martin auctions, lot 20, Feb. 5, 2007; ex-Joseph Murphy collection. (01-18423/JS). ANTIQUE. $12,000-15,000.
