RARE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMPANY “K” 9th US CAVALRY

“BUFFALO SOLDIER” SHARPS CARBINE. Cal. 50-70. S# 91825. This is a fine example of a Buffalo soldier 1867 cartridge conversion New Model 1863 Sharps carbine. Carbine has excellent collection history, condition & impeccable unit markings: “CO K / 9 CAV” stamped on right side of receiver & left side of buttstock. These markings are highly forged & it is so nice to find a 100% original & “as found” uncleaned example, probably the best original Buffalo Soldier carbine extant. This gun shows honest use w/ distinct saddle wear, well cared for.
9th US Cavalry was made up of black enlisted men, many being veterans of the Civil War. The unit was organized in New Orleans in summer of 1866 & was commanded by Col. Edward Hatch a distinguished Iowa cavalry commander during the Civil War. Hatch was well known as an Indian fighter w/ his Buffalo soldiers. Hatch would command the unit until his death at Fort Robinson in 1889. The 9th was a hard fighting unit that saw numerous actions against Apache, Sioux, Comanche & other tribes mostly in Texas. Company K saw service starting at Ft. Stockton, Texas & served w/ valor in the Apache Wars & against the Sioux. “Company K” was one company assigned directly under Col. Hatch until his death. 44 Buffalo soldiers from the 9th were killed while serving Hatch, 28 against the Apache. 11 members of the 9th were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. No other American unit can claim this feat. CONDITION: very good, complete & original missing only its lever latch. Metal has a smooth mottled gray patina, well discerned markings. Mechanically fine w/ good discernible rifling. PROVENANCE: Ex-Charles Worman collection; Pictured on page 22 of “Firearms of the American West” Vol. II, 1985; Floyd Everhart, 2003; Estate of Tig Sogoian 2016; Estate collection of western gentleman.
