84TH REGIMENT OF FOOT CARTRIDGE BOX PLATE. A very rare, excavated British Revolutionary War cartridge box plate for the 84th Regiment of Foot otherwise known as the Royal Highland Emigrants. The 84th was a hard fought unit with the First Battalion serving at Quebec in 1775, Lake Champlain in 1778 and the Mohawk Valley from 1780-82. The Second Battalion served at the Siege of Boston in 1775, Charleston, Long Island and Newport in 1776, Penobscot River in Maine in 1778-79, the Mohawk Valley, Charleston, Eutaw Springs, along with many other battles and skirmishes during the 1780-83 period. This plate is nearly 2" in diameter and features a central thistle with a beaded circle below and a crown above. The inside garter reads, "NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSET" which translates to "NO ONE SHOULD KILL ME WITH IMPUNITY". The outside border reads, "QUICQUID AUT FACERE AUT PATI" which translates to "WHATEVER EITHER IS TO BE DONE OR ENDURED". The reverse still retains 2 of the 3 original attachment lugs. CONDITION: plate has a uniform dark brown/green patina with amazing details remaining on the front of the plate. As stated, 1 attachment lug is missing. (02-17712/BF). $3,000-4,500.
